Meeran Masjid- Galle
Meeran Masjid- Galle
Meeran Masjid (Masjid is the Arabic for mosque) is the largest & most well known mosque in the Galle Fort. Built over 300 years ago originally as a baroque Portuguese cathedral, it was refurbished in 1904 & converted into a mosque. Muslims in Sri Lanka, most of whom originally descended from Arab traders are about 7% of its population. (Remaining population is Buddhists 70%, Hindus 15%, & Christians 8%). This mosque illustrates both the reality of Sri Lanka's distinct minorities & its aspirations to be an inclusive, multicultural state.
