Stilt Fishermen- Weligama
Stilt Fishermen- Weligama
Stilt fishermen sit on a cross bar called a "petta" which is tied to a vertical pole driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From their position on high, fishermen cast their unbaited lines waiting for a fish to swim along to be caught. Stilt fishing does not disturb the fish like using nets do, so fish stay in the area longer allowing a greater chance for them to be caught.
